Contemporary Niello

Niello is a traditional goldsmithing technique that creates a strong contrast in silver using a dark alloy.

It is among the oldest jewellery techniques, with origins in the ancient Near East and Mesopotamia. From there, it spread through Greece and Rome into Europe. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, niello became a widely used decorative method, especially on silver.

Niello is a black metallic mixture applied into engraved lines on the surface of metal, creating a distinct contrast between bright silver and dark decoration. Each niello piece is the result of precise handwork, bringing together a long tradition with a contemporary authorial approach.
